In this site, you'll find out how to go "off-grid"

[picture of house with many panels] Unlike the house in this photo, you don't have to have thousands of dollar of panels to start with solar. One or two small panels will do wonders.

May's/June's Question of the Month
Question: What is the best solar radio?

Answer: It's hard to say what's the "best" radio for everyone and every situation. But if I had to pick I'd say Innovage's Outdoor Battery-free Crank Radio. It has AM, FM, and Weather bands. Comes complete with a headphone jack, earbuds, extenable antenna, a 2-inch speaker thats surprisingly loud for its size, and a durable hand crank to recharge the internal battery on cloudy days or night. NO SOLAR PANEL is included, but just find a 6-volt panel or a panel with multiple outputs and plug it in the jack! The best part is that this radio is very affordable, only $9 at Rite-Aid, although I've seen it for as much as $15 on Amazon.

My second choice would be NexxTech's AM/FM Solar Pocket Radio. It has no handcrank and no weatherband. But it is slightly smaller. I've seen it a Circuit City for $14.99.
